Things are heating up at Chevrolet, as the brand will receive its fair share of fully electric models that General Motors is currently developing on its Ultium platform, and there’s a new variant of its flagship sports car on the way. Maybe even two.
In addition, Chevy will introduce a revised version of its current-generation full-size pickup, and we’ll likely soon see an all-new generation of its midsize offering as well. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the refresh of some of the brand’s crossovers, but that’s all coming together this year. Here’s what to expect from the Chevrolet brand in 2022.
On the electrification side of things, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV received a mid-cycle refresh with new front and rear-end styling and a reworked interior, while the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV was be introduced in the summer of 2021 as a slightly longer and roomier version of the electric crossover. However, a massive battery recall was announced and sales of the two Bolt variants are on hold until all current owners of 2017 to 2022 model-year vehicles get their battery packs replaced. A very bad start to GM’s electrification push, although it’s worth noting that the Bolts are not based on the new Ultium platform.
The Chevrolet Silverado EV was fully revealed on January 5th at the 2022 CES, and other fully electric models will soon follow, such as the Chevy Equinox EV and Blazer EV. The Silverado EV will arrive in 2023 as a 2024 model, in RST First Edition and Work Truck variants first, followed by other trim levels including the Trail Boss.
The subcompact Chevrolet Trax is reaching the end of its production cycle, and for the 2022 model year, it gets few changes. It’s still available in LS and LT trim levels, with a front-wheel or all-wheel drivetrain.
For 2022, the Chevrolet Trailblazer get paint color changes, electronic air conditioning replaces a manual unit and SiriusXM satellite radio is now available on more trim levels. It’s available in LS, LT, Activ and RS trim levels, and although the U.S. market still gets the choice between a turbocharged 1.2L and 1.3L inline-three engines, the latter is now the only one available in Canada.
The Chevrolet Equinox benefits from a substantial update for the 2022 model year. It gets new front and rear fascias, reworked cockpits, new paint colors and alloy wheel designs, more standard active safety features, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a disable switch for the automatic stop/start system. The base L trim level has been removed from the U.S. market lineup, but the big news is the addition of a sporty RS trim level in both the U.S. and Canada. Every Equinox is equipped with a turbo 1.5L inline-four with 170 horsepower, along with front-wheel and all-wheel drivetrains.
The Chevrolet Blazer two-row, midsize crossover sees its base L and 1LT trims cut from the U.S. market, and the lineup now consists of 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier. The Canadian market gets LT, True North, RS and Premier trims. The 2.5L inline-four is gone, so the base powerplant is now the turbocharged 2.0L four with 228 horsepower, while the 308-horsepower 3.6L V6 is offered in uplevel trims. Option package reshuffling, paint color deletions and additions as well as the disappearance of the cargo floor rail system are the most notable changes.
The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse received a mid-cycle refresh with new exterior styling and some interior changes, paint color and wheel design changes, the deletion of the base L trim level in the U.S., more standard active safety features as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Redesigned for the 2021 model year, the Chevrolet Tahoe gets a few notable and several minor changes this year. The 420-horsepower, 6.2L V8 is now optional in the Z71 and Premier trim levels instead of being exclusive to the High Country, there’s a new 12-inch fully digital driver instrument panel, and some paint colors have been replaced. The 355-hp 5.3L V8 and 277-hp 3.0L diesel inline-six are still available as well.
The Chevrolet Suburban is the extended-wheelbase counterpart of the Tahoe, with even more rear-passenger room and tons of cargo space in back. It’s offered with the same trim level and powertrain choices as the Tahoe, along with the exact same changes for the 2022 model year.
The Chevrolet Colorado soldiers on virtually unchanged for 2022, as the pickup is scheduled for a thorough redesign for the 2023 model year, and this new generation should be unveiled sometime in 2022. A Trail Boss package was added for the U.S. market, but due to overwhelming demand, it was made unavailable shortly thereafter.
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was supposed to receive a mid-cycle refresh with revised styling, a reworked cabin as well as added tech and active safety features. This new Silverado was indeed introduced, but after a delay caused by complications stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. GM decided to launch the 2022 Silverado 1500 Limited, which is basically a continuation of the 2021 model, but with a few changes such as the deletion of the aging 4.3L V6 and one of the 5.3L V8 variants. The new Silverado gains a ZR2 edition with off-road equipment surpassing those of the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss. The revised pickup will go on sale in early 2022.
Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Silverado HD soldiers on in 2022 with expanded availability of the Multi-Flex tailgate, a paint color change and a new set of 20-inch alloy wheels. That’s about it. The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are still offered in Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and High Country trim levels along with 6.6L gas and turbo-diesel V8 engines.
The Chevrolet Spark rolls into 2022 with no changes, apart from the deletion of three paint colors and the addition of three new ones. The U.S. lineup consists of LS, 1LT, Activ and 2LT trim levels, while the Canadian market still doesn’t get the Activ variant for some strange reason. Every Spark is equipped with a 98-horsepower, 1.4L inline-four matched to either a five-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable automatic.
The Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan loses its base L trim level in the U.S., while an electronic parking brake has been added. Paint color changes and the deletion of many dealer-installed accessories rounds up the changes for 2022. The Malibu is equipped with a turbo 1.5L inline-four with 160 horsepower, while the range-topping Premier benefits from a 250-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0L four.
Last year’s Wild Cherry packages on the Chevrolet Camaro have been renamed Design Package 1 through 3, some paint colors have changed and the 1LE Track Performance Package is no longer available on the LT trim level. Otherwise, the muscle car soldiers on without major changes and keeps the same powertrain list consisting of a 275-hp turbo 2.0L four, a 335-hp 3.6L V6, a 455-hp 6.2L V8 and a 650-hp supercharged 6.2L V8.
The Chevrolet Corvette received a new IMSA GTLM Championship Edition to commemorate Corvette Racing’s successful season with the new C8.R race car. The limited-edition package quickly sold out and is no longer available to order. Three paint colors were replaced, and that pretty much rounds up the most notable changes for the 2022 model year. That said, the 2023 Corvette Z06 was recently revealed and will go on sale in the summer of 2022, equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.5L flat-plane crank V8 engine that develops 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The Z06 also sports a wider body to accommodate larger rubber. In addition, the long-rumoured Corvette E-Ray hybrid might debut sometime in 2022 as a 2023 model. Both new variants of the Corvette were delayed due to complications caused by the pandemic.
Finally, the archaic Chevrolet Express full-size commercial van is still around, in Cargo and Passenger configurations, heading into 2022 with minor interior and exterior changes. The Express is available with either a 4.3L V6, a 6.6L V8 or a turbo-diesel 2.8L inline-four.
