Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 1960s British Novels) for Thursday, June 13, 2024 (Season 40, Game 199):
The author of this novel said of the last chapter left off U.S. editions, “My young thuggish protagonist grows up”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Mike Flanagan, a non-profit executive from Winchester, Massachusetts |
Hakme Lee, a scientific instructional technician from Seattle, Washington |
Adriana Harmeyer, an archivist from West Lafayette, Indiana (11-day total: $258,700) |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
11-day champion Adriana Harmeyer is starting to approach some milestones, having surpassed the $250,000 mark in total winnings already. She’s 36 correct responses from 300 and will very likely reach the “within 30” part of that list after today’s game. However, I would say that Hakme Lee and Mike Flanagan would very much like to put a stop to Adriana’s winning ways!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange was published in two versions: a British version with a 21st chapter, where protagonist Alex turns away from ultra-violence and “grows up”, and an American version where Alex does not. Burgess’s vision saw Alex growing up because Burgess believed that everyone was capable of reform; his American editor disagreed, believing that it was possible for humans to be incapable of reform. (Yikes!)
Unfortunately for Burgess—who later said that he only originally agreed to the American changes because he needed the money—Stanley Kubrick only read the American version when directing the film adaptation, which is the version of the story that most are familiar with today. Burgess spent the rest of his life annoyed with what he believed to be Kubrick’s omission of the intended ending of the story—though Kubrick believed that the darker story was ultimately better, even after having read the book’s final intended chapter.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Adriana $15,800 Hakme $9,200 Mike $4,400)
Adriana: Standard cover bet over Hakme is $2,601; I wouldn’t recommend going higher than this, because it’s always a possiblity that second place will underbet here. (Actual bet: $4,000)
Hakme: If Adriana makes a cover bet here and is incorrect, she falls to $13,199. Thus, you need to bet at least $4,000 to pass that. (Actual bet: $3,000)
Mike: If Hakme bets her minimum and is incorrect, she falls to $5,200. Additionally, if Hakme bets to pass Adriana by $1 and is incorrect, she falls to $2,599. Thus, I would bet between $801 and $1,800 here. (Actual bet: $726)
